Mustangs Fall at CSUN in Saturday Big West Opener
1/8/2022 3:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE – Sophomore forward Kyle Colvin (above) finished with a game high 24 points during the Cal Poly men's basketball program's Saturday afternoon delayed Big West Conference opener, but CSUN – aided by an 18-0 second-half run – claimed a 68-55 victory inside The Matadome.
Sophomore forward Brantly Stevenson grabbed a career high 11 rebounds for Cal Poly (3-9, 0-1), which saw an early second-half lead overturned after being held without a point for nearly nine minutes. Cal Poly, returning to action after 22 days following the cancellation of its final scheduled non-conference game and opening three Big West matchups, outrebounded CSUN (5-8, 1-0), 38-30.
Colvin, who also grabbed eight rebounds, finished 6-for-10 from the floor, 9-for-11 from the free throw line and sank three three-pointers.
Cal Poly returns to Mott Athletics Center to host UC Riverside on Thursday, Jan. 13 in its first home game in 59 days – by, 19 days, the lengthiest stretch between home games of any Division I program this season. Tip time for Cal Poly's 800th Division I game is 7 p.m.
During Saturday's matchup, CSUN's early lead was erased after five-and-a-half minutes with a Stevenson three-pointer handing Cal Poly an 11-9 advantage.
Backed by 15 first-half Colvin points, the Mustangs led by as much as 26-19 before CSUN tied the matchup at 26-26 with four minutes remaining in the half. A pair of free throws from Matadors forward Onyi Eyisi provided the hosts a 30-29 edge with two-and-a-half minutes to go and the two sides traded the lead three times down the stretch before Cal Poly took a 33-32 advantage into the break.
A Colvin jumper and two free throws from junior forward Alimamy Koroma staked Cal Poly to a 37-32 lead to open the second half, but CSUN responded with its 18-0 run to go up, 50-37, with 10-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Cal Poly shortened its deficit to single digits three times the remainder of the afternoon, but failed to close the gap to fewer than eight points.
