
Cal Poly Fares Better in Second Round of Season-Opening Husky Invite

BREMERTON, Wash. -- Opening with a four-person 293 total, the Cal Poly men's golf team lowered its score in the second round to 289 and climbed three spots into 12th place entering Tuesday's final round of the Husky Invitational.
Coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs are tied for 12th with Southern Mississippi and Seattle, all with six-over-par 582 totals on the 7,155-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at Gold Mountain. The trio of squads are just 15 shots behind second-place Oregon.
Washington, however, is the runaway leaded with a 23-under-par 553 aggregate, 14 strokes ahead of the Ducks with 18 holes remaining to be played Tuesday morning.
Cal Poly's top scorers Monday were Joey Zambri and Nicholas Mok, both with two-under-par 142 totals for 36 holes and tied for 19th place. Zambri carded rounds of 74 and 68 while Mok checked in with a 72 and 70.
Will Draper is tied for 46th place after posting a 73 and 75 while Luke Adam is tied for 59th place following rounds of 74 and 76. Freshman Baron Szeto recorded a 74 and 77 and is tied for 62nd place in his first collegiate tournament.
There are 16 teams and 80 golfers in the field.
Heading into the final round, R.J. Manke of Washington has a one-stroke lead over three other golfers. Manke posted a 67 and 68 for a nine-under-par 135 total while Mikey Slesinski of Saint Mary's, Jack Rahon of Seattle and Chuan-Tai Lin of Washington share second place with 136 aggregates.
Zambri's 68 included six birdies and a pair of bogeys. He is eighth in par-4 scoring at two under par and fourth in birdies with 10. Draper, Adam and Szeto all carded one eagle on the day while Mok leads the field in pars with 30.
In a separate tournament for individuals, Cal Poly's Austin Liu carded rounds of 73 and 70 on the Cascade Course and enters Tuesday's final round tied for 17th place, seven strokes behind Grayson Leach of Oregon.
