7/25/2021 8:52:00 AM | Softball
With the victory, Mexico – which notched single runs in the second and third innings before scoring three times in the fifth to top Italy – climbed to fourth place in the six-team pool. Mexico can reach the bronze medal game by defeating Australia on Monday, July 26 in the final pool stage game for both countries. First pitch is 4 a.m. PT (8 p.m. local).
A Monday victory for Mexico (1-3) would eliminate Australia (1-3) and advance Mexico to the bronze medal game versus Canada (2-2). That game is scheduled for Monday, July 26 at 9 p.m. PT (Tuesday, July 27; 1 p.m. local).
The United States (4-0), which edged Australia in eight innings on Sunday, 2-1, will meet Japan (4-0) in Monday's final pool stage game and for the gold medal on Tuesday.
Hyland, who has appeared in two of four games for Mexico during the Olympics, would become the first Cal Poly athlete to medal since Stephanie Brown-Trafton (United States) won discus gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
