Ruotolo Wins Heptathlon Title at Big West Championships

Bouzigues Also Makes All-Conference Team with 2nd-Place Decathlon
IRVINE, Calif. — Cal Poly's Julianna Ruotolo won the Big West Conference championship for the heptathlon on Saturday, earning the title with 4,832 points.
She became the fifth Mustang in program history to win a conference heptathlon crown, joining Sharon Day (2008), Diane Korbel (1995), Julie Tingle (1991 & 1993) and Hana Novak (1988).

Heading into the final event of the meet at UCI's Anteater Stadium, Ruotolo trailed UC Davis' Sydney Holmes by a 53-point gap. Not only did Ruotolo win the 800-meter finale; she did so in career-best fashion, taking first place via 2:20.75 — besting UC Santa Barbara rival Jessica Swalve's 2:22.39, while improving her PR by 2.4 seconds.
En route to the title, Ruotolo started her day with a career-best long-jump effort of 18 feet and an inch, prior to adding another PR in the javelin, at 91' 7".
Meanwhile in the decathlon, Dylan Bouzigues also made the All-Conference Team for the Mustangs, taking second place with 6,973 points.
After opening Day 2 with a 110m hurdles showing of 15.20 seconds, Bouzigues won the discus, throwing for a mark of 133' 11". He then pole-vaulted 13' 9.75", before closing with back-to-back PRs: 182' 5" in the javelin and then 4:48.13 for the 1,500m, to finish back of only LBSU's Aaron Booth (7,520 points).
Bouzigues' tally of 6,973 points moved to No. 9 in school history.
In addition to Ruotolo and Bouzigues, two more Mustangs also scored team points at the Multi-Event Finals, giving Cal Poly a boost entering next week.
Adelae Fredeen came in fifth place in the heptathlon, compiling 4,632 points. Her day was highlighted by a career-best javelin throw of 108' 2", followed by a season-best 800m time of 2:30.88 (securing fourth place in the closing event).
Freshman hurdles specialist Shimona Draper made her debut in a heptathlon, registering 3,756 points, finishing just two spots back of team points as well.
Adam Gockel contributed 3 team points to the cause, thanks to his sixth-place decathlon finish upon a score of 5,919. In addition to throwing the discus a career-best 115' 9", Gockel won the pole vault with a clearance of 14' 9.5", before adding a third-place javelin mark of 172' 1".
Cal Poly is in first place in the women's team standings with 14 points, one up on UCSB, while the men's squad resides in second place with 11 points, six shy of the Gaucho lead.
The full stage of the BWC Championships will return to UCI for May 13-15, debuting a new three-day format.
