SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program swept this week’s Big West Field Athlete of the Week awards.
Travis Martin was named the Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, while Lexi Evans won the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award.
This is the first time the Mustangs have swept the Big West men’s and women’s Field Athlete of the Week awards since March 15, 2022, when Mathis Bresko earned the men’s award and Emily Hallett received the women’s award.
This is the second time in three weeks Martin has been crowned the Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. In just his second meet of the season, Martin won the men’s hammer throw at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, recording a lifetime best of 242 feet, 2 inches (73.82 meters). The mark ranks No. 1 in the conference, No. 1 in the West Region, No. 2 in Division I and No. 28 in the World this outdoor season. He bested his previous personal best three separate times during the competition with his best throw coming on his final attempt. It’s the fifth best mark recorded by an American in the hammer throw this year, and the 2025 Second Team All-American also improved his No. 2 mark in school history by over 2 feet.
A Mustang has won three of the five Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week awards handed out this outdoor season, with Conrad Bernstein also earning the award on March 10. This is the third time in his career and the first time since April 30, 2024, that Martin has won the award.
Evans is the first Cal Poly athlete to receive Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors since she won the award for the first time on March 25, 2025. The praise comes after she placed first in the women’s pole vault at the Stanford Invitational with a mark of 13 feet, 11.75 inches, which ranks No. 1 in the Big West, No. 9 in the West Region and No. 14 in Division I so far this outdoor season. The two-time Big West pole vault champion and indoor and outdoor school record holder is just three weeks removed from placing 12th at the NCAA Indoor Championships to earn Second Team All-American honors.
The Mustangs return to action next week, splitting the team between three teams in Southern California — the Mt. SAC Relays hosted by Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday-Saturday, the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific on Thursday-Saturday and the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State on Friday-Saturday.
