BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- CSU Bakersfield snapped a 4-4 tie with five runs on five hits and a walk in the seventh inning and went on to defeat Cal Poly 9-5 in the opener of a four-game Big West Conference baseball series Friday afternoon at Hardt Field.
Mustang redshirt freshman right-hander Drew Thorpe notched the first out of the seventh on an infield grounder before the next six CSU Bakersfield batters reached base to produce the five runs. Jacen Roberson and Nick Grossman both singled in a pair of runs and Tyler Jorgensen also singled for an RBI.
Cal Poly got one run back in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Cole Cabrera and loaded the bases with two outs, bringing the potential game-tying run to the plate. A fly ball to right field, however, dashed the threat.
With the loss, Cal Poly falls below the .500 mark for the first time since February, dropping to 20-21 with 12 losses in their last 18 games and 10-15 in Big West games. CSU Bakersfield improves to 15-13 and 12-9.
Both teams scored four times in the first three innings and were held scoreless in the middle innings until CSU Bakersfield put together its five-run rally in the seventh.
Kellen O'Connor (1-2), who was 0-2 with an 8.71 ERA when he entered the game in the fourth inning for the Roadrunners, pitched four scoreless frames before allowing a run in the eighth. He earned the win by scattering six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The loss was charged to Thorpe (4-5), who gave up seven runs and nine hits over 6 1/3 innings with four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Kyle Scott entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, allowed all three baserunners to score along with two more to batters he faced. Carlo Lopiccolo tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings to finish up.
Thorpe, 4-1 with a 3.57 ERA at home, is 0-4 with a 5.02 ERA in road contests.
Cal Poly scored a run in the first on a wild pitch and, after CSU Bakersfield scored three in the second inning, answered right back with three in the top of the third on a two-run single by Nick Marinconz and an error in the outfield.
CSU Bakersfield tied the game in the bottom of the third on Roberson's triple to left field.
Cal Poly's 11-hit offensive attack featured two singles and a double by catcher Myles Emmerson and two singles each by outfielders Cole Cabrera and Nick DiCarlo.
Roberson and Grossman both had three hits for CSU Bakersfield.
Cal Poly turned three double plays in the middle innings to keep the game tied at 4-4.
The two teams play a noon doubleheader Saturday with southpaws Andrew Alvarez (5-2, 4.01 ERA) and Travis Weston (4-5, 3.32 ERA) on the mound for the Mustangs.
