CSU Bakersfield Completes Sweep of Big West Doubleheader
5/8/2021 3:02:00 PM | Baseball
One day after erupting for five runs in the seventh inning of a 9-5 win Friday, the Roadrunners scored three times in the seventh inning of Saturday's doubleheader opener en route to a 7-6 triumph over Cal Poly at Hardt Field.
CSU Bakersfield didn't stop there, breaking a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 5-1 victory in the nightcap for a sweep of the twinbill.
The Roadrunners are 17-13 for the season and 14-9 in Big West games while Cal Poly, which suffered its fourth and fifth straight losses for the first time this season, fell to 20-23 and 10-17, 10th in the 11-team conference.
With a 3-0 lead in the four-game series, CSU Bakersfield has won a series against Cal Poly for the second time. The Roadrunners swept a three-game set against the Mustangs in 2011. Cal Poly still leads the series, which began in 2009, with 22 wins and nine losses.
With two outs in the seventh inning of the opener, Jacen Roberson doubled to drive in two and Tyler Jorgensen followed with an RBI single to cap the three-run rally.
Art Joven, a transfer from Missouri, earned the victory. He entered the game with the score tied at 4-4, one out in the top of the seventh, Mustang runners at first and second and induced Brooks Lee to hit into an inning-ending double play with one pitch.
Joven (3-3) allowed the Mustangs to load the bases in the eighth on two walks and a dropped fly ball in center field, but Cody Tucker relieved Joven and got Sam Biller to fly out to left field to end the threat.
Cal Poly rallied for two runs in the ninth as Lee singled up the middle for two RBIs, but Cody Tucker secured the final three outs for his second save, leaving Lee at first base.
Junior southpaw Andrew Alvarez (5-3) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs and 11 hits over 6 2/3 innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. Over his previous four starts, Alvarez had posted a 2-0 record and 1.24 ERA with 30 strikeouts over 29 innings.
Cal Poly established its 4-0 lead with three runs in the second and one more in the third. Collin Villegas doubled to score two and Cole Cabrera's sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the second. Tate Samuelson hit his fifth home run of the season in the third inning for a 4-0 Mustang lead.
CSU Bakersfield tied the game in the fifth on two doubles, a walk and a pair of singles.
Samuelson and Lee each had two of Cal Poly's 10 hits while CSU Bakersfield's 12-hit offensive attack was paced by left fielder Eric Charles with three singles. Jorgensen and Salas each added two hits.
In the nightcap, a pair of little-used Roadrunner pitchers combined to hold Cal Poly to just one run and five hits over eight innings.
Noah Cordova (2-1), who had pitched just 10 innings over five relief appearances, went 5 2/3 innings Saturday for the win, allowing one run and four hits in his first start of the year while Graham Kuck, making just his third appearance on the mound this year, tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, giving up one hit.
Southpaw Travis Weston (4-6) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs and eight hits over seven innings with nine strikeouts, two shy of his career high. Derek True faced one batter before coming out with an ankle injury and Chase Walter secured the final four outs.
After CSU Bakersfield scored a run in the second inning, Cal Poly tied the game in the fifth on singles by Joe Yorke and Sam Biller plus a sacrifice fly by Myles Emmerson.
The Roadrunners snapped the tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff home run by Nick Grossman, back-to-back doubles by Nick Salas and Aaron Casillas and a run-scoring single by Jacen Roberson.
Cal Poly had two runners on base with two outs in the third, loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and the first two batters reached base in the ninth but stranded eight runners on the basepaths for the game. In addition, the Mustangs hit into three double plays.
Samuelson singled twice for his second multiple-hit game of the day and 10th of the season. Jorgensen produced a double and two singles for CSU Bakersfield and is 6-for-11 in the series.
Cal Poly will try to salvage one win in the series Sunday at 1 p.m. with redshirt freshman right-hander Kyle Scott (1-1, 3.86 ERA, five saves) to start for the Mustangs on the mound, facing CSU Bakersfield junior right-hander Roman Angelo (2-1, 3.49 ERA).
