Liu Climbs Six Spots, Cal Poly Falls to Fourth in Big West Finals

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Austin Liu's round of 70 included an eagle, but the Cal Poly men's golf team slipped into fourth plate after the second round of play Monday in the 2021 Big West Conference Championship at the La Quinta Country Club.
Coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs bettered their four-person team score by six strokes, but each of the nine teams in the conference finals lowered their scores as Cal State Fullerton moved ahead of Cal Poly in the team standings.
The Mustangs are fourth with rounds of 296 and 290 for a 586 total, trailing second-round leader Long Beach State by 16 strokes entering Tuesday's final round. Long Beach State has a 570 total, followed by UC Davis at 580 and Cal State Fullerton at 582.
Liu moved up six spots on the leaderboard into a tie for ninth place with his 70 on the 6,960-yard par-72 course. The round included an eagle on the 543-yard par-5 11th hole along with five birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey.
Liu has a one-over-par 145 total and is eight shots behind individual leader Lucas Carper of UC Davis, who has posted a 70 and a 67 for a seven-under-par 137 total.
Blake Brothers of CSUN, Garrett Boe of Cal State Fullerton and Hunter Epson of Long Beach State share second place at two under par. Brothers also shot a 67 Monday, Boe a 69 and Epson a 71.
Joining Liu in the top 20 after 36 holes of play are Joey Zambri, Will Draper and Tanner Podres.
Zambri added a 72 to Sunday's 75 and is in a tie for 16th place with his 147 total while Draper and Podres share 18th place with one other golfer at four-over-par 148. Both recorded their second round of 74 in the tournament.
Luke Adam, in a tie for sixth place with a 73 after the first round, slipped to a 79 Monday and is in a tie for 28th place with 18 holes to play.
Podres and Zambri share sixth place in the birdie count for two rounds with eight each while Liu is one of 11 golfers with an eagle on his card. Liu also is second in par-4 scoring at even par while Draper is eighth in par-3 scoring at one over par. Podres and Drape both are five under par on the par-5 holes, fourth among the 45 golfers in the tournament.
Cal Poly will tee off from the first hole with UC Santa Barbara and CSUN on Tuesday from 8 to 8:40 a.m.
