VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: GAME 1 | GAME 2
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cole Cabrera, a native of Honolulu, drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, forcing in the winning run as Cal Poly edged Hawai'i 5-4 in the opener of a Big West Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs completed a sweep of the twinbill with a seven-inning 14-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Cal Poly improves to 30-25 overall and 20-19 in Big West games. Winners of six straight and 10 of their last 11 games, the Mustangs can finish tied for fourth place in the Big West with UC San Diego and CSUN, both 21-19, with a win in Sunday's series finale. Hawai'i fell to 24-25 and 16-23 with Saturday's two losses.
In the opener, Cal Poly overcame 2-1 and 4-3 deficits for the victory.
Brooks Lee singled up the middle for an RBI in the first inning, his 55th RBI of the season, three shy of a spot in the top 10 in Cal Poly's record book for RBIs in a single season.
Later in the game, Lee doubled down the right-field line, his 25th of the season, tying the school record set by Taber Maier in 1997. He scored on Tate Samuelson's triple which was lost in the sun in left field, tying the game at 2-2. Taison Corio's sacrifice fly tallied Samuelson for a 3-2 Mustang lead.
Hawai'i scored twice in the top of the ninth for a 4-3 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, a Hawai'i throwing error set the stage for an RBI double by Corio, tying the score at 4-4. Nick DiCarlo was intentionally walked and Connor Gurnik was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, giving Cabrera a chance for his third walk-off plate appearances of his Mustang career. The game-winning bases-loaded walk was his 34th free pass of the year.
Lee had two of Cal Poly's six hits. Hawai'i's nine-hit offensive attack was paced by Jacob Igawa and Alez Baeza, each with two hits.
Mustang starter Andrew Alvarez, seeking his eighth win of the season, allowed four runs and eight hits over 8 1/3 innings. Kyle Scott (1-2) blew the save but earned the win by securing the final two outs of the ninth inning.
The loss went to Cameron Hagan (0-1), the second of four pitchers used by the Rainbow Warriors.
In the nightcap, Cal Poly erased early 2-0 and 4-3 deficits to earn its 30th victory of the year, achieving the milestone for the 13th time since and including the 2000 campaign. The Mustangs won 30 games in 2016 and 2018.
In the second inning, a throwing error allowed two runs to score and Joe Yorke's infield groundout gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.
After Hawai'i regained the lead with two runs in the top of the third, Cal Poly tallied five times for an 8-4 advantage. Tate Samuelson doubled to drive in two, Reagan Doss drew a bases-loaded walk and Yorke's two-run single up the middle capped the uprising.
The Mustangs scored six times in the seventh to break the game open and register their second run-rule win of the series and fifth of the year. A sacrifice fly by Nick Marinconz plated the first run, Doss doubled to drive in two, Yorke singled for an RBI and Cabrera ended it with a two-run double to left-center field.
Carlo Lopiccolo (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings in relief of starter and former College of San Mateo teammate Zach Button for the win. The redshirt sophomore right-hander struck out six and did not walk a batter, scattering five hits.
The loss went to starter Austin Teixeira (3-2) as he allowed eight runs (four earned) and three hits with four walks and no strikeouts.
Samuelson finished with three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Yorke had two singles and four RBIs. Cabrera and DiCarlo also had two hits each. Adam Fogel and Dustin Demeter both had three of Hawaii's 11 hits.
Final game of the series and 2021 season will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly redshirt freshman right-hander Kaden Sheedy (1-2, 5.75 ERA) to face Hawai'i senior right-hander Logan Pouelsen (4-2, 3.68 ERA).
Four Mustangs playing their final game at home -- senior Myles Emmerson and redshirt juniors Connor Gurnik, Cole Cabrera and Nick DiCarlo -- will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
