SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly ended its 2021 baseball season with a seven-game winning streak and winners of 11 of its last 12 following a 6-2 triumph over Hawai'i, completing a sweep of its four-game Big West Conference series Sunday inside Baggett Stadium.
Redshirt freshman shortstop Brooks Lee broke the school record for doubles in a season with his 26th and 27th of the season, surpassing the old mark of 25 set by Taber Maier in 1997, and senior catcher Myles Emmerson produced his seventh three-hit game of the year, sparking a 14-hit Mustang offensive attack.
With the win, Cal Poly wrapped up a 31-25 campaign, including a 21-19 mark for a fourth-place tie with CSUN and UC San Diego in the Big West Conference. The Mustangs jumped six spots from 10th place over the last three weekends by sweeping Cal State Fullerton, winning three of four at UC Davis and sweeping the Rainbow Warriors this weekend.
"We played extremely well the last three weeks to end the season," said 19th-year Mustang head coach Larry Lee. "We were in a bad place after the UC Santa Barbara and CSU Bakersfield series and, to turn it around by winning 11 of 12 over the last three weeks, speaks to the resiliency of our players and the energy they put into practices and games.
"They didn't waver and it's a testament to how hard they worked on the field and in practice," Lee added. "As a result, they were rewarded with some high-level baseball toward the end of the season."

The game was scoreless until Cal Poly scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by Tate Samuelson and Brooks Lee produced the first run -- Lee's two-bagger to left-center field putting him in the record book, surpassing Taber Maier, who doubled 25 times in 1997.
Nick Marinconz also doubled in the inning and Taison Corio's single to right-center field gave Cal Poly a 2-0 lead.
Hawai'i responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. Catcher Tyler Murray homered, his first of the season, and Jacob Igawa drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2.
An RBI double by Lee, a run-scoring infield single by Samuelson and a sacrifice fly by Marinconz snapped the deadlock and gave Cal Poly a 5-2 advantage in the bottom of the fifth.
A double by Joe Yorke, a single by Nick DiCarlo and Emmerson's sacrifice fly gave Cal Poly an insurance run in the eighth.
Redshirt freshman right-hander Derek True (2-1) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Mustang starter Kaden Sheedy for the win, scattering three hits with one strikeout. Outside of facing one batter at CSU Bakersfield on May 8, True was pitching for the first time in four weeks following an ankle injury.
Kyle Scott secured the final five outs for his seventh save. Sheedy, who pitched a complete-game three-hitter at UC Davis last Sunday, was lifted after allowing two runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.
The loss was charged to sixth-year Hawai'I senior Logan Pouelsen (4-3), who surrendered five runs and 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
While Emmerson collected his ninth career three-hit game, Lee, Samuelson, Yorke and DiCarlo all had two-hit games as Cal Poly garnered double-digit hits for the 12th time in its last 17 games.
Scotty Scott and Dustin Demeter each had two hits for Hawai'i, which lost its last six games, 11 of 12 and posted a 4-15 mark in May.
Cal Poly hit .351 in the series, led by Samuelson (7-for-16, three doubles, one triple, four runs scored, five RBIs) and Lee (6-for-17, four doubles, one home run, seven runs scored, seven RBIs). Corio (seven RBIs), Yorke, DiCarlo, Emmerson and Cole Cabrera all had five hits in the series.
Cal Poly made just four errors over its final 17 games of the season and just one in its last two series, finishing with a Big West-leading .979 fielding percentage. The Mustangs also led the conference in double plays with 47.
"We played really solid defense the last half of the year," said Larry Lee. "That really helps limit the opposition from scoring."
Cal Poly won 11 of its first 17 games, including a 3-1 start in conference play, before hitting a midseason slump which saw its team batting average drop from .301 to .253 and losses in 18 of 27 contests, falling to 20-24 overall and out of contention for a Big West title.
"We started very well in non-conference, taking two of three versus both USC and UCLA, but as soon as we hit conference, we didn't play up to our potential," Lee said. "We limped to the finish line as we didn't have three of our four best relievers and one starting pitcher.
"We also really had only three healthy position players on the bench," Lee added. "We did not really have a lot of options, but the young players who were out there gained valuable experience that we hope will help them next year."
Emmerson and redshirt juniors Cabrera, DiCarlo and Connor Gurnik were honored in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
