No. 5 Mustangs Split Pair of Matches Saturday Against Ranked Opponents

Stanford, Calif. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball team split its two matches Saturday against ranked opponents, beating No. 9 Cal 3-2 and losing to No. 12 Stanford 2-3 at Beach Volleyball Stadium on the campus of Stanford.
The No. 5 Mustangs (14-4) are now 6-4 against ranked opponents this season. The win over the No. 9 Bears is their third over a fellow top-10 team this year.
In the first match of the day against the No. 12 Cardinal, Stanford got on the board first after a 21-15, 21-19 win at the No. 4 spot.
Cal Poly then evened things up after the No. 2 pairing of grad transfer Amy Ozee and redshirt sophomore Jayelin Lombard (pictured) defeated Kate Reilly and Xolani Hodel in a three set thriller 21-18, 16-21, 15-13.
The Mustangs then took a 2-1 lead after the No. 1 duo of redshirt senior Emily Sonny and redshirt junior Macy Gordon took down Charlie Ekstrom and Sunny Villapando 21-14, 22-20.
Stanford tied the score 2-2 after a 21-16, 21-19 win at the No. 3 spot to force it to be decided by the No. 5 pairings.
After dropping the first set 18-21, Cal Poly's No. 5 duo of redshirt sophomore Hannah Rogers and freshman Piper Naess won the second set 21-16 to force a deciding set. Down 10-13, Rogers and Naess scored back-to-back points to cut the Stanford lead to one. The pairs then traded points before Stanford's Emmy Sharp and Amelia Smith took it 15-13 to clinch the victory for the Cardinal.

Right after the match against Stanford, Cal Poly was back on the sand to face No. 9 Cal.
The Mustangs got the first point of the match at the No. 4 spot after Cal was forced to withdraw due to one of its players could not continue due to injury when the score was tied 6-6 in the first set.
Cal Poly then went ahead 2-0 after the No. 2 pairing of Ozee and Lombard beat Ainsley Radell and Jordan Polo in three sets 21-17, 19-21, 15-7. Ozee and Lombard are now 12-5 together and have eight of their last 10 matches.
The victory for the Mustangs was later clinched by the No. 3 pairing of redshirt juniors Tia Miric and Mariah Whalen after they beat Alexia Inman and Maddie Micheletti 21-19, 21-18. They are now 6-3 together so far this season.
The Bears (8-4) then won at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots to make the final score 3-2 Mustangs.
Cal Poly, winners of 11 of its last 12 matches, will head across the Pacific Ocean next weekend to take on No. 16 Hawai'i for three matches on Friday, April 9, Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11 with times still to be determined.
