
No. 6 Mustangs Take First Match of Weekend Series Against No. 14 Hawai’i Friday

HONOLULU— For the second straight time this season, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team took down No. 14 Hawai'i Friday night in Honolulu 3-2 in the first match of a tri-dual weekend series.
The No. 6 Mustangs (15-4) started the match by collecting the first two points. The No. 5 pairing of redshirt sophomore Vanessa Roscoe (pictured) and redshirt freshman Josie Ulrich started the match by beating the Rainbow Wahine's (7-6) Anna Maidment and Sofia Russo in straight sets 21-17, 21-12. They are now 9-4 together this season and have won their last seven matches.
Cal Poly then went ahead 2-0 after the No. 3 duo of redshirt juniors Tia Miric and Mariah Whalen beat Kylin Loker and Harlee Kekauoha in a three-set thriller 22-20, 10-21, 15-13. Miric and Whalen are now 7-3 together so far this year.
After Hawai'i picked up a point with a three-set win at the No. 4 spot, the Mustangs' No. 1 duo of redshirt senior Emily Sonny and redshirt junior Macy Gordon clinched the victory for Cal Poly with a three set comeback win over Amber Igiede and Brooke Van Sickle. After dropping the first set 17-21, they rebounded to take the second 21-9 to force a third set in which they pulled out a close 15-13 win. They now have a team-best record of 14-4 together this season, all at the No. 1 spot.
Cal Poly has now won 12 of its last 13 matches this season. The Mustangs have defeated Hawai'i in five of the last six meetings dating back to 2019. They will look to sweep the regular season series with the Rainbow Wahine Saturday when they play a double-header. The first match is set for 6 p.m. PT with the second match starting at 10 p.m. PT.
