No. 6 Mustangs Split Saturday Doubleheader Against No. 14 Hawai’i

HONOLULU— The Cal Poly beach volleyball team split its double header against No. 14 Hawai'i Saturday in Honolulu, winning the first match 4-1 before falling in the second match 0-5.
The No. 6 Mustangs (16-5) wrapped up their three dual matches against the No. 14 Rainbow Wahine (8-7) by winning two of the three matches. Overall, Cal Poly won three of the four regular season matches against Hawai'i during the regular season.
In the first match of the day, the Rainbow Wahine got on the board first with a straight sets win at the No. 5 spot. From there, the No. 3 duo of redshirt juniors Tia Miric and Mariah Whalen tied things up with a 21-9, 21-17 win over Kylin Loker and Harlee Kekauoha. Whalen and Miric are 8-4 together this season.
The No. 4 pairing of redshirt sophomore Vanessa Roscoe and redshirt freshman Josie Ulrich then gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after a 21-19, 21-15 win over Ilihia Huddleston and Kaylee Glagau. They now have a record of 10-5 together.
That was followed by redshirt sophomore Jayelin Lombard and graduate transfer Amy Ozee, a former UH player, getting a three set comeback win at the No. 2 spot over Pani Napoleon and Jamie Santer 15-21, 21-13, 15-11 to clinch the victory for Cal Poly. They now have a record of 13-7 together this year.
The 4-1 win was then completed by the No. 1 pair of redshirt senior Emily Sonny and redshirt junior Macy Gordon getting a 21-17, 11-21, 15-12 victory over Amber Igiede and Brooke Van Sickle. They now have a team-best record of 15-5 this season.

About an hour later, the two teams played again at Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.
At the No. 5 spot, redshirt sophomore Hannah Rogers and freshman Piper Naess fell in two close sets 16-21, 26-28 to Anna Maidment and Sofia Russo.
Cal Poly's No. 4 pairing of Roscoe and Ulrich then fell to Huddleston and Glagau 14-21, 22-24 before Lombard and Ozee lost their match at the No. 3 spot to Kekauoha and Lea Kruse 16-21, 19-21.
Playing this time at the No. 2 spot, Miric and Whalen won the first set of their match 21-19 but then dropped the next two 14-21, 13-15 to Van Sickle and Igiede.
Finally, the No. 1 pair of Sonny and Gordon were close in both of their sets but fell to Napoleon and Santer 19-21, 17-21.
Despite the loss in the second match, the Mustangs have won 13 of their last 15 matches. They have also beat Hawai'i in six of the last eight meetings between the two teams.
Cal Poly and Hawai'i will wrap up the weekend Sunday by playing a double-elimination style pairs tournament that will not count toward team records. That will start at 1 p.m. PT.
