Graff/Roscoe and Naess/Ulrich Declared Co-Champs of Sunday Pairs Tournament

HONOLULU — Redshirt sophomore duo Kalee Graff (pictured) and Vanessa Roscoe as well as freshman Piper Naess and redshirt freshman Josie Ulrich were co-champions of Sunday's beach volleyball exhibition pairs tournament in Honolulu.

The event, which did not count toward team or pair records, was a 15-pair double elimination tournament that featured pairs from both Cal Poly and the University of Hawai'i.

On the Mustangs' side, head coach Todd Rogers mixed up his duos with most of the pairs featuring players who had little to no experience playing together. In fact, neither of Cal Poly's winning pairs of Graff and Roscoe or Naess and Ulrich have played together in a dual match this season.

For Graff and Roscoe, their path to being named co-champions started with a first round loss to Hawai'i's Amber Igiede and Sabrina Hardisty 18-21. In the elimination part of the bracket, they defeated their teammates of Erika Foreman and Amanda Walker 21-12. They then defeated another Mustang duo of Sam Strah and Hannah Rogers 21-13 followed by a 21-14 win over Cal Poly's Tia Miric and Delaney Peranich as well as a 21-18 revenge win over Hawai'i's Igiede and Hardisty to send them to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Graff and Roscoe took down the Mustang duo of Emily Sonny and Jayelin Lombard 21-15 to advance to the championship.

As for Naess and Ulrich, their path started with a first round win over the Rainbow Wahine's Jaime Santer and Sydney Rau-Kim 21-14. They then defeated their teammate duo of Amy Ozee and Eleonore Johansen 21-17 followed by a 21-14 win over Hawai'i's Igiede and Hardisty to put them in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, they took down the Rainbow Wahine's Lea Kruse and Harlee Kekauoha 21-16 to advance to the championship.

Due to time restrictions, the championship match was not played and Naess/Ulrich and Graff/Roscoe were declared co-champions.

This weekend marked the No. 6 Mustangs' final regular season road trip. They will now play the final two weekends of the regular season at home starting next weekend when they host four teams ranked in the top 10 for the second annual Center of Effort Beach Volleyball Challenge on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17 at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. Cal Poly will face No. 2 USC and No. 9 Grand Canyon on Friday at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. and No. 1 UCLA and No. 5 Loyola Marymount University on Saturday at 2 p.m and 5 p.m.
