Mustang Spotlight - Q & A with Track & Field's Enzo Sison
4/21/2021 8:15:00 PM | Track and Field
Enzo Sison, who has a season-best pole vault clearance of 16 feet, 4.75 inches (5.00m), interned last summer with Apple, contributing to the development of Apple's ecosystems touched by MFi technology.
Also participating in campus' Hatchery Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Sison is set to soon graduate in LAES (Liberal Arts & Engineering Studies), focusing in data structures, object-oriented programming & computer science. Today, Enzo spent a few moments discussing this season, and his major with @CPMustangs:

What do you love most about competing in track and field?
The rush of joy I feel after I clear a big bar is why I love competing in this sport. Time feels like it slows to a halt during those few seconds of freefall. It's one of the handfuls of life experiences that makes me feel most alive.
How did you first get into track?
I started competing in track and field in 4th grade. During middle school, I fell in love with the sport and tried every event available but always enjoyed the field events most, specifically the jumping events. My dad helped coach me in high jump and I cherished the way track brought us closer.
During high school, I focused entirely on high jump and long jump. I didn't find my passion for pole vault until the tail end of my high school journey.
What's your favorite thing about the team?
My favorite part about the team is that it makes Cal Poly feel like home. Randomly bumping into friends from track around campus or other places in SLO gives me a true feeling of belonging.
The relationships I've formed with my teammates make track feel like a family and I'm blessed to be able to call such amazing people my friends. I deeply love this sport and the friends it's brought into my life, and I'm trying to do everything I can to make the most of the time I have left.
Outside of track & field, have you picked a career goal yet?
My career goal is to serve in a role that bridges the gaps between engineering, business and design in a technologically focused company. Within that company, I want to contribute my work and passion to the creation of a product that deeply moves people. After college, I'll be starting as a project manager.
What's been your favorite class at Cal Poly?
LAES 302 (Advanced Project-Based Learning in Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies). This class was exciting because it closely aligned with my career goals. I got the opportunity to practice the Scrum development process and lead a team of project managers, architectural engineers, and creative writing students in building an iOS app for Cal Poly.
What are your goals on the track for the rest of this 2021 season?
This season I'm focused on jumping 17 feet and qualifying for NCAA regionals.
