Mustangs Wrap Up Home Portion of Schedule With 4-1 Win Over UCSD Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team kept its stellar play at home going until the very end, beating visiting UC San Diego 4-1 Saturday at Mustang Tennis Complex in its final home match of the season.
The Mustangs (11-1, 5-1 BWC) were able to pull out the victory over the Tritons (2-6, 1-4 BWC) despite losing the doubles point. UC San Diego started by getting a win at the No. 1 spot 6-2. Cal Poly's No. 2 pairing of redshirt freshmen Melissa LaMette and Delanie Dunkle later won their match 6-4 to improve their record together to a team-best 8-3 this season. The Tritons then won at the No. 3 spot in close fashion 7-5 to take the doubles point.
In singles, redshirt sophomore Emily Ackerman started things off in dominating fashion in straight sets without losing a game over Rachel Wagner 6-0, 6-0. Ackerman is still unbeaten in singles this season at 11-0.
LaMette then later picked up her first win at the No. 1 spot, beating Sophie Person in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. She now has a record of 11-1 this season.
Dunkle followed soon after with a three set win at the No. 2 spot over Ella Pachl 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead. The win improves Dunkle's record this season to 9-2 and is her third straight.
The match was clinched by freshman Shreya Ravilla after she beat Monica Stratakos in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Ravilla is now 4-3 this season.
After the match, Cal Poly honored Grace Olyphant and MacKenzie Worsnop (pictured), who played their final home match Saturday at Mustang Tennis Complex. At the time the match was clinched, Olyphant was leading in her match at the No. 4 spot 6-4, 4-3 and Worsnop had won her first set at the No. 5 spot and was at 6-1, 5-6.
Cal Poly finishes the 2021 season with a home record of 8-1, its best record and most home wins in a season since 2011. With a 5-1 conference record, Cal Poly sits in second place as of Saturday, just behind UC Santa Barbara who is 4-0. Up next for the Mustangs is a road match against the first-place Gauchos on Saturday, April 17 at 1:30 p.m.
