SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Despite doing something it hasn't done all season in losing the doubles point, the Cal Poly women's tennis overcame that in singles to defeat visiting Fresno State 4-2 Saturday at Mustang Tennis Complex to remain unbeaten this season.
For the first time this season, the Mustangs (6-0) did not win the doubles point. The Bulldogs' (4-3) No. 1 pairing of Dalia Ahmed and Deniza Marcinkevica started things off with a 6-2 win over redshirt freshmen Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette. Cal Poly's No. 2 duo of redshirt freshman Dominique Stone and redshirt junior MacKenzie Worsnop then took their match 6-3 to force it to come down to court three. At the No. 3 court, Fresno State's Cristina Flaquer and A.C. Hummel defeated freshman Shreya Ravilla and junior Grace Olyphant 6-3 to take the point.
In singles, LaMette kept her career unbeaten streak going after taking down Marcinkevica at the No. 2 spot in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3 to even the team score 1-1. LaMette is now a team-best 6-0 this season and 14-0 for her career so far.
Soon after, Stone gave Cal Poly a 2-1 lead after beating Ahmed from the No. 1 position 6-4, 7-5. She is now 5-1 this season.
Worsnop (pictured) then pushed the Mustang advantage to 3-1 after she defeated Carlotta Marzano at the No. 6 spot 6-0, 6-2 for her first singles win of the season in as many tries.
After the Bulldogs won at the No. 3 spot to make it 3-2 Cal Poly, Olyphant clinched the victory for the Mustangs after a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position. She is now 2-1 in singles competition this season.
Cal Poly will take its undefeated record on the road next week for a conference matchup against UC Riverside on Friday, March 12 at 1:30 p.m.
