Mustangs Get Road Win Over Hawai’i 6-1 Saturday to Stay Perfect

HONOLULU — The Cal Poly women's tennis team kept its perfect start to the season going Saturday with a 6-1 road victory over Hawai'i to improve to 9-0 this season.
For the eighth time this season, the Mustangs (9-0, 3-0 BWC) took the doubles point to begin the match. Cal Poly's No. 2 pairing of redshirt freshmen Melissa LaMette and Delanie Dunkle got things going with a 6-2 victory to improve to 5-3 together. The No. 1 duo of redshirt sophomores Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu then clinched the doubles point after a 6-2 win. They are now a perfect 6-0 together this year.
Ackerman then quickly put the Mustangs ahead 2-0 after getting a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 singles position to remain unbeaten this season at 8-0.
Redshirt freshman Dominique Stone (pictured) later took her match at the No. 1 spot in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. She is now 8-1, all at the No. 1 position this year and has won eight matches in a row.
Junior Grace Olyphant then clinched the match for Cal Poly after getting a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot to move to 3-1 in singles competition.
Dunkle later grinded out a three set win at the No. 4 spot, 7-6(5), 4-6, 13-11 to improve to 7-2 this year.
LaMette finished out the 6-1 win with a three set comeback victory at the No. 3 spot 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to keep her singles winning streak going. She is now a team-best 9-0 this season and is now 17-0 in her Cal Poly singles career.
Cal Poly will be back in action next Saturday, April 3 at home against CSUN at 11 a.m.
