SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team kept their unbeaten record intact Saturday, beating Big West foe CSUN 4-1 at Mustang Tennis Complex to improve to 10-0 this season.
For the Mustangs (10-0, 4-0 BWC), it is also their 12th straight win at home dating back to the 2018-19 season. The 10 wins are also already the most the program has had in a season since finishing 10-11 in the 2011-12 year.
Against the Matadors (5-3, 2-2 BWC), Cal Poly started the day by taking the doubles point for the ninth time this season. At the No. 1 spot, the pair of redshirt sophomore Emily Ackerman and redshirt junior MacKenzie Worsnop got things going with a 6-2 victory in their first time playing together this season. The No. 2 duo of redshirt freshmen Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win to improve to 6-3 together this year.
Once singles got underway, CSUN evened the score after getting a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot. However, redshirt junior Grace Olyphant put Cal Poly back ahead after a straight sets 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 position. She is now 4-1 in singles competition this season.
LaMette (pictured) then followed up with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot to give the Mustangs a 3-1 advantage. LaMette remains unbeaten in singles in her Cal Poly career. She is now a team-best 10-0 this season after being 8-0 last year.
Ackerman later clinched the match for the Mustangs after a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory at the No. 4 spot. She also remains unbeaten in singles this season at 9-0 in addition to being undefeated in doubles regardless of partner at 7-0.
Now sitting with a 4-0 Big West record, Cal Poly is currently at the top of the standings with UC Santa Barbara in second at 3-0 and Hawai'i, who the Mustangs beat last weekend, is in third place at 3-1.
Cal Poly will now get ready to play its final two home matches of the season next weekend when welcoming in Cal State Fullerton on Friday and UC San Diego on Saturday. Both matches are set for 11 a.m. starts.
