SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif — The Cal Poly women's tennis kept its undefeated start to the season going Monday, beating the University of San Francisco 5-2 at Mustang Tennis Complex to improve to 8-0 this season.
The Mustangs (8-0, 2-0 BWC) started the match by doing something they have done in seven of their eight wins this season, winning the doubles point. The No. 3 duo of redshirt freshman Dominique Stone and redshirt junior MacKenzie Worsnop got things started with a 6-1 win from the No. 3 spot. They are now a team-best 7-0 together this year. The doubles point was then clinched by the No. 1 pairing of redshirt sophomores Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu after they won 6-2 to also remain undefeated together this season at 5-0.
In singles, Stone (pictured) won her seventh match in a row after winning her match at the No. 1 spot in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. She is now 7-1 so far this year.
Not long after, Bhunu made it 3-0 Cal Poly after she also won her match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 from the No. 2 position. She is now 6-1, all from the No. 2 spot this season.
After the Dons (6-3) won at the No. 4 spot to cut the lead to 3-1 in favor of the Mustangs, Cal Poly redshirt freshman Melissa LaMette clinched the victory after winning 7-6(4), 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. LaMette is now a team-best 8-0 this season and is still unbeaten in her singles career at 16-0 after finishing last year's shortened season 8-0.
Later, Ackerman won her match at the No. 5 spot in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to also remain unbeaten this season at 7-0.
The 8-0 start for the Mustangs is the best through eight matches under sixth-year head coach Kat Winterhalter. They have also won their last 11 matches at home going back to 2019. Cal Poly currently sits atop the Big West standings as they have the best overall record and are tied with Hawai'i with a 2-0 Big West record.
The Mustangs will next travel to Hawai'i on Saturday for a match against the Rainbow Wahine at 2 p.m. PT.
