SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt junior Alex Stater (pictured) came back after dropping the first set of his singles match at the No. 1 spot to win the next two and clinch a 4-3 victory for the Cal Poly men's tennis team over the University of New Mexico Tuesday at Mustang Tennis Complex to help the program win its third match in a row.
The Mustangs (7-7) started off the match by taking the doubles point over the Lobos (2-6). The No. 3 pairing of Stater and redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan took down UNM's Alex Maggs and Stepan Holis 6-3 for their fifth win of the season together. The No. 1 duo of redshirt freshman Joe Leather and redshirt junior Roman Shenkiryk then defeated Raul Dobai and Jake Tronsdon 6-4 to clinch the point for Cal Poly.
Once it moved to singles, Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead after redshirt freshman Fernando Fonseca took his match in straight sets over Rafael Abdulsalam 7-6(5), 6-4 at the No. 5 position. Fonseca is now 7-6 on the year and has won his last three matches
The Mustangs then went ahead 3-0 after Leather took care of business at the No. 4 spot in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 over Sergio Molina to improve his record to 7-5 this season and has won four matches in a row.
New Mexico won matches at the two, three and six spots to tie the match at 3-3 and force it to come down to the No. 1 spot and Stater
After dropping the first set 4-6, Stater responded by winning the second 6-2 and force a deciding third. With all eyes on him, he won the third set 6-4 to clinch the 4-3 victory for the Mustangs. With the win, Stater is now a team-best 10-3 this season and has won three in a row in singles.
Cal Poly is now 4-0 at home this season and have won their last six home matches dating back to last season. They are currently riding a three-match winning streak and will look to extend it next weekend when they host Hawai'i on March 26 and UC Irvine on March 27 at Mustang Tennis Complex.
