
Mustangs Blank Grand Canyon 7-0 Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Behind a dominant team effort across the board, the Cal Poly men's tennis team shut out visiting Grand Canyon 7-0 Friday at Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (5-7) grinded to win the doubles point. Cal Poly's No. 3 duo of junior Alex Stater and sophomore Gary Vardanyan got things started with a 6-0 victory for their third win together this season. After the Lopes won at the No. 1 spot, the Mustangs' No. 2 pair of senior Antoine Noel and junior Andrew Whitehouse clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win, their first together this year.
In singles, Cal Poly won all six matches in straight sets. Freshman Joe Leather won his match at the No. 4 position 6-1, 6-2 to improve his record to 5-5 this season.
Freshman Noah Berry followed shortly thereafter with a 6-1, 6-1 victory from the No. 2 spot in the lineup. He is now 5-4 on the season.
That was followed by Noel getting his first singles win of the season after a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 position.
Vardanyan then took his match at the No. 5 spot 7-5, 6-2 to move his singles record to 6-5 this season.
At the No. 1 spot, Stater pushed his singles record to a team-best 8-3 after getting a 6-4, 6-4 win.
The 7-0 victory was then clinched by freshman Fernando Fonseca after he won his match at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-3 to improve to 5-6 this season in singles.
Cal Poly will play the second of its five-match homestand on Sunday when welcoming in Gonzaga, First serve is set for 10 a.m. at Mustang Tennis Complex.
