SAN LUIS OBISPO – After tossing the Cal Poly softball program's first no-hitter in three years on Friday, Feb. 26 and homering in both games of the team's doubleheader split versus Boise State, freshman righthander Bailey Doherty was named Big West Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday, as well as the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
During Cal Poly's 2-0 win against Boise State to open the Feb. 26 doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton's Anderson Family Field, Doherty – in just her second collegiate appearance and start – struck out 12 and faced just two batters over the minimum to record the program's first no-hitter since righthander Lindsey Chalmers blanked UC Davis on April 14, 2018.
Doherty began the matchup by striking out the Boise State side in the top of the first inning before striking out two more in the second. She then provided herself the only run support needed by leading off the bottom of the second with her first career home run. Only walks issued in the fourth and fifth innings kept Doherty from a perfect game.
Doherty's 12-strikeout performance marked the highest total by a Mustang since All-American Sierra Hyland struck out 13 CSU Bakersfield hitters on March 25, 2017.
During game No. 2 of the Feb. 26 doubleheader, Doherty hit a two-run homer and struck out two in three and one-third innings of relief. She took the loss, however, after allowing a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth as Cal Poly fell, 7-6.
During the two games, Doherty struck out 14 in 10.1 innings and held Boise State to a .118 batting average. At the plate, she recorded a 2.000 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage.
As a program, Cal Poly opens its home slate at Bob Janssen Field when hosting Saint Mary's for a three-game, March 6-7 series. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 6.
