Mustangs Knock Down Previously Unbeaten BYU 6-1 Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team wrapped up the opening weekend of its 2021 season by taking down previously undefeated BYU on Saturday 6-1.
The win over the Cougars (5-1) improves the Mustangs to 2-0 after they also defeated Grand Canyon University on Friday.
Just as the case was Friday, Cal Poly took the doubles point after wins by the No. 1 pairing of redshirt sophomores Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu 6-1, as well as by the No. 3 duo of redshirt freshman Dominique Stone and redshirt junior MacKenzie Worsnop 6-3.
Both the doubles pairings of Ackerman/Bhunu and Stone/Worsnop are 2-0 so far this season.
In singles, redshirt freshman Delanie Dunkle (pictured) got things going by winning her match in dominant fashion at the No. 4 spot, 6-0, 6-1. She is now 2-0 so far this season.
Ackerman followed her lead shortly thereafter with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 position in the lineup. She is also 2-0 so far this year.
At the No. 1 spot, Stone picked up her first singles win of the year in straight sets over Anastasia Abramyan, 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the match win for the Mustangs.
Redshirt freshman Melissa LaMette won her match at the No. 3 spot, coming back to win in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. She is also 2-0 this season and is now 10-0 in her career going back to last season when she finished 8-0.
Bhunu wrapped up Cal Poly's 6-1 win with a three-set comeback victory at the No. 2 spot, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. She also improves to 2-0 so far this season.
The Mustangs are next scheduled to compete on Feb. 27 on the road at Sacramento State.
