SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Playing a match for the first time in 335 days, the Cal Poly women's tennis team won its season opener over Grand Canyon University Friday 6-1 at Mustang Tennis Complex.
It was a dominant team effort as the Mustangs (1-0) started the match off by taking the doubles point over the Lopes (0-3), something Cal Poly did in every one of their wins last season.
The Mustangs' No. 1 doubles pairing of redshirt sophomores Kim Bhunu and Emily Ackerman (pictured) took their match over Grand Canyon's Natasha Puehse and Jana Weiss 6-4. That was followed soon after by Cal Poly's No. 3 duo of redshirt freshman Dominique Stone and redshirt junior MacKenzie Worsnop winning their match 6-3 over the Lopes' Joely Lomas and Taylor Andersen to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs.
Redshirt freshman Delanie Dunkle got things started for Cal Poly in singles with a straight sets win over Autum Prudhomme 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 4 spot in the lineup.
Bhunu then put Cal Poly ahead 3-0 after winning her match in straight sets over Emilia Occhipinti 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 2 spot.
Soon after, Ackerman clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a 6-2, 7-5 win from the No. 5 position in the lineup over Lomas.
Redshirt freshman Melissa LaMette made it 5-0 a short time later with a straight sets win over Weiss from the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-4.
Junior Grace Olyphant completed the 6-1 victory after getting a win in straight sets from the No. 6 position over Andersen, 6-2, 6-4.
The Mustangs will be back in action again at home on Saturday at 2 p.m. against BYU.
