Mustangs Fall To USD In Friday Road Match

SAN DIEGO — Redshirt junior Alex Stater (pictured) picked up his second singles win in as many tries but the Cal Poly men's tennis team fell on the road Saturday to the University of San Diego 1-6.
The Mustangs are now 1-1 on the young season after starting their season off with a 6-1 win Thursday against San Diego State.
In doubles, Cal Poly got a win from its No. 3 tandem of Stater and fellow redshirt junior Roman Shenkiryk over the Toreros' (1-0) Ilias Zimmerman and Sacchitt Sharma 6-4. The Mustangs just missed winning the other two doubles matches, losing at the No. 1 spot 6-7, and the No. 2 spot 5-7.
The win by Stater and Shenkiryk improves their doubles record to 2-0 so far.
In singles, Stater picked up the lone win for the Mustangs at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. He defeated USD's David Norfeldt in comeback fashion in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Cal Poly will look to rebound Sunday when visiting Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles at 10 a.m.
