Mustangs Open 2021 Season With 5-2 Road Win Over San Diego State

SAN DIEGO — Playing their first match in 334 days, the Cal Poly men's tennis team kicked off their 2021 season on Thursday with a 5-2 road win over San Diego State.
Playing in his first match of his Mustang career, freshman Noah Berry (pictured) had the match-clinching singles victory while also winning his doubles match.
The Mustangs (1-0) started the match by taking the doubles point after winning on all three courts. Cal Poly's No. 2 doubles tandem of Berry and redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan kicked things off with an impressive 6-1 victory. The No. 3 pairing of redshirt juniors Alex Stater and Roman Shenkiryk followed soon after with a 6-3 win to guarantee the doubles point for the Mustangs. The No. 1 Mustang doubles team of redshirt senior Antoine Noel and redshirt freshman Joe Leather made it a sweep a short time later with a 7-6 (5) win.
In singles, redshirt freshman Fernando Fonseca picked up the first win for Cal Poly with a straights set victory with scores of 6-4, 6-3 playing at the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
Soon after, Vardanyan also won his match in convincing fashion with scores of 6-3, 6-1 from the No. 5 position to put Cal Poly ahead 3-0.
Later on, Berry sealed the opening match victory for the Mustangs with a three-set comeback win at the No. 2 spot, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Stater put the finishing touches on the match after a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position in the lineup for Cal Poly's fifth point of the match.
The Mustangs will look to improve to 2-0 Friday when they travel to take on the University of San Diego at 2 p.m.
