DAVIS, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team kept its hot start to the 2021 season going Sunday, taking down UC Davis 5-2 on the road in its first match against a Big West team this season and remain unbeaten.
Just as they've done in every other match this season, the Mustangs (5-0, 1-0 BWC) took the doubles point over the Aggies (2-2, 0-2 BWC). Redshirt freshman Dominique Stone and redshirt junior MacKenzie Worsnop started things off for Cal Poly by winning their match at the No. 3 spot 6-3 to keep their perfect record together intact at 5-0. The doubles point was then clinched after redshirt freshmen Melissa LaMette and Delanie Dunkle won their match at the No. 2 position 7-5 to improve to 3-2 together this year.
In singles, Stone put Cal Poly ahead 2-0 after getting a 6-2, 6-2 win from the No. 1 spot. She is now 4-1 this season, all while playing at the top position in the lineup.
Redshirt sophomore Emily Ackerman then won her match in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 from the No. 5 spot to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. With the win, Ackerman remains perfect at 5-0 in singles this season.
The win was clinched for Cal Poly after Dunkle (pictured) took her match in straight sets at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-4. Dunkle is also now a perfect 5-0 in singles this season.
Also improving to 5-0 this season with a win Sunday was LaMette. She won her match at the No. 3 spot in comeback fashion 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. She is now 13-0 in singles in her Mustang career.
Cal Poly returns home to Mustang Tennis Complex next weekend for a pair of non-conference matches. The Mustangs will host Santa Clara on Friday, March 5 and Fresno State on Saturday, March 6. Both matches are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
