Cal Poly Defeats Santa Clara 5-2 in Home Opener Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After playing its first seven matches of the season on the road, the Cal Poly men's tennis team won its home opener Saturday over visiting Santa Clara 5-2 at Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (4-4), started off by winning the doubles point thanks to victories on two of the three courts. The No. 3 duo of redshirt junior Alex Stater and redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan got things going with a 6-3 win to improve to 1-1 together this season. That was followed by the No. 2 pair of redshirt senior Antoine Noel and freshman Noah Berry winning their match 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for Cal Poly. Berry and Noel are also now 1-1 together this year.
The Broncos (1-1) evened the score 1-1 after getting the first singles win of the day at the No. 4 spot. However, Cal Poly redshirt freshman Fernando Fonseca regained the lead for the Mustangs a short time later with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 6 position. Fonseca is now 4-3 on the year.
Playing at the No. 1 spot in the lineup for the second straight match, Stater put the Mustangs ahead 3-1 after getting a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The reigning Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week improved his record to a team-best 7-1 this season.
Vardanyan (pictured) then clinched the match for Cal Poly after getting a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 5 spot to improve his record to 4-3 this year.
After Santa Clara picked up its second point of the match at the No. 2 position, Berry completed the 5-2 victory for Cal Poly after a three-set comeback win from the No. 3 spot in the lineup, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He is now 4-2 so far this season to begin his Mustang career.
Cal Poly will hit the road once again next week and head to Eugene, Ore. for three matches. The Mustangs will play the University of Oregon on March 5 and 7 and face the University of Portland in Eugene on March 6.
