Cal Poly Edged Friday Afternoon at Pepperdine, 4-3

MALIBU – Redshirt junior Alex Stater, freshman Noah Berry (above) and redshirt freshman Fernando Fonseca each prevailed in singles play Friday afternoon for the Cal Poly men's tennis program, but the Mustangs were swept in doubles and dropped the remaining three singles bouts in falling at Pepperdine, 4-3.
Playing at the No. 1 spot, Stater improved to 6-1 this season by outlasting Adrian Oetzbach, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7. Berry's match at No. 2 singles was the first to finish as he slid past Guy Den Ouden, 6-2, 6-1. Cal Poly's third victory came at No. 5 as Fonseca recovered from an opening-set loss to upend Pietro Fellin, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
In the remaining singles matches, Pepperdine's Corrado Summaria topped Cal Poly redshirt freshman Joe Leather at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4. Mustang redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan fell at No. 4 to Robert Shelton, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 6, Cal Poly freshman Carter Crookston dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Pawel Jankowiak.
In doubles play, Cal Poly's closest chance at a point came at the No. 3 spot, but the Mustang duo of Stater and Vardanyan sustained a 6-4 loss to Pepperdine's Fellin and Daniel de Jonge.
Cal Poly (3-4), which closed a season-opening, seven-match road trip on Friday, makes its 2021 home debut on Saturday, Feb. 27 when hosting Santa Clara. First serve is 12 noon.
