MORAGA, Calif. — Despite having to start its match earlier than expected and not playing doubles, the Cal Poly men's tennis team took down Saint Mary's 4-2 Thursday on the road.
The dual match, which started at 12:30 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. due to the potential of inclement weather in Moraga, went straight into singles and did not include doubles.
In singles, Mustang redshirt freshman Joe Leather put the first point on the board with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 5 position for his first win of the season.
After the Gaels (0-3) got a win at the No. 6 spot to tie the score, freshman Noah Berry regained the lead for the Mustangs (2-2) with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot. He is now 2-1 so far this season.
Saint Mary's once again tied the score after a win at the No. 1 position before Cal Poly redshirt junior Alex Stater won his match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot to put the Mustangs ahead 3-2. He is now 3-1 in singles so far this year.
The match was capped off by redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan getting a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot to finish off the 4-2 victory for Cal Poly. Vardanyan is also now 3-1 in singles so far this season.
The win improves the Mustangs' overall record to 2-2 this season. They will look for another victory Friday when they travel north to face Sacramento State at 12 p.m.
