Mustangs Season-High Offense Leads to Road Sweep Over Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It could not have been a better start to the road trip this week for the Cal Poly volleyball team Thursday night as the Mustangs (6-10, 4-1 BWC) swept UC Riverside 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-21) thanks largely to Cal Poly hitting a season-high .413 for the match.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers led the way offensively with 15 kills, hitting .433 while also adding eight digs and a career-high four service aces. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham added 12 kills while hitting .417. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out 41 assists while directing the team to the season-high hitting percentage.
Defensively, freshman libero Peyton Dueck led the play in the back row with a team-leading 16 digs while junior defensive specialist Lea Ungar added 13 digs. At the net, redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt had a team-high six blocks while fellow redshirt freshman Kate Slack added five blocks.
As a team, the Mustangs committed just seven attack errors on the night and dominated the Highlanders (4-11, 0-5 BWC) in just about every statistical category. Cal Poly held UC Riverside to a .137 hitting percentage and had nearly twice as many kills while also having more digs, blocks and service aces.
Cal Poly started the first set by getting out to a 7-3 lead. Up 8-3, Stivers served three aces in a row to make it 11-8. Later at 15-8, UC Riverside went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 17-14 that forced a Mustang timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Mustangs put their foot on the gas pedal and finished the set by scoring eight consecutive points to win it 25-14. For the set, the Mustangs hit .385 and committed just two attack errors.
Cal Poly continued to pour it on offensively in the second set, hitting .571 while holding the Highlanders to a flatline .000 hitting percentage. The Mustangs got out to an 8-2 lead to begin the set and never looked back. Up 11-4, Cal Poly used a 7-2 run to go ahead 18-6 before going on to win it 25-11.
The Mustangs began the third set by taking a 7-3 lead before the Highlanders cut it to 8-6. The two teams stayed close from there with Cal Poly never holding a lead of more than three points until, up 14-12, the Mustangs went on a 4-1 run to push their lead to 18-13. Cal Poly took its largest lead of the set at 22-15 before UC Riverside scored five straight points to cut the lead to 22-20. The Mustangs then completed the sweep by ending the set on a 3-1 run to win it 25-21.
Cal Poly will now travel up north to take on UC Davis Saturday at 3 p.m.
