SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham collected 16 kills and fellow redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt had a career-high 14 kills but the Cal Poly volleyball team fell at home to UC Irvine Saturday, 0-3 (25-18, 25-22, 32-30).
In addition to her 16 kills, Stockham also recorded six digs. Elsewhere for the Mustangs (9-12, 7-3 BWC), junior setter Avalon DeNecochea had 30 assists and seven digs. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added six kills.
The Anteaters (13-7, 6-4 BWC) had the advantage in nearly every statistical category. They hit .345 for the match compared to Cal Poly's .157. They also had nine blocks to the Mustangs' two.
UC Irvine was led by outside hitter Joy Umeh who had a match-high 20 kills, hitting .366. Outside hitter Marianna Bertolone recorded a double-double with 14 kills and a match-high 15 digs.
The first set was close early. Tied at 5, the Anteaters went on a 5-1 run to go up by four. Later leading 15-11, a 4-1 run by UC Irvine pushed their lead to 19-12. Cal Poly got it back to as close as 22-18 before the Anteaters scored three straight points to win the set 25-18.
In the second set, UC Irvine got out to a 5-1 lead to start it. The Mustangs got it back to 6-4 before the Anteaters went on a 5-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. Cal Poly responded with five straight points to get it back to within one at 11-10. The Mustangs eventually got it back tied at 14 when UC Irvine went on another 5-1 run to take a 19-15 lead. Trailing 21-17, the Mustangs fought their way back again within one after scoring three consecutive points. With UC Irvine then leading 22-21, the Anteaters finished the set by scoring three of the next four points to win it 25-22.
The third set was a battle for the ages that saw 20 ties, 12 lead changes and took extra points to decide it. UC Irvine took an 8-5 lead before Cal Poly countered with an 8-3 run to take a 13-11 lead. The two teams went back and forth from there showing incredible fight. UC Irvine held off a total of seven set points. Neither team was able to score the final two points in a row it needed until, with the Mustangs ahead 30-29, three straight kills by the Anteaters was enough for them to win the set 32-30.

The Mustangs will look to bounce back next week when hosting another pair of matches at Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs will take on Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Oct. 29 and Long Beach State on Saturday, Oct. 30. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
