Mustangs Pull Out Thrilling Five-Set Win Over UC San Diego Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham set her season-high for both kills and digs while recording a double-double and two other Mustangs also had double-digit kills to help the Cal Poly volleyball team grind out a five-set win over UC San Diego Friday night 3-2 (25-15, 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12) in front over nearly 2,000 fans at Mott Athletics Center in the two programs first-ever meeting.
The Mustangs (9-11, 7-2 BWC), who played their first match of the season without their leader in kills in redshirt senior Jamie Stivers after she broke her arm against Hawai'i last week, got big contributions from multiple players Friday. Stockham tallied her first double-double of the season with season-highs of 19 kills and 16 digs while hitting .279. Junior outside hitter Kristina Jordan added a season-high 11 kills while junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips chipped in 10 kills to go along with a team-high five blocks. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out 43 assists and had six digs and three blocks. Freshman libero Peyton Dueck was also huge for Cal Poly, grabbing a team-high 19 digs while also collecting a career-high six service aces, two off tying the all-time program record.
Team wise, the Tritons (7-13, 4-5 BWC) outhit the Mustangs .202 to .182 and also had more blocks, kills, and digs. However, Cal Poly had more service aces and fewer service and attacking errors on the night which proved to be the difference.
Cal Poly dominated UC San Diego in the first set, siding-out at a 75-percent clip while holding the Tritons to a .037 hitting percentage. After going ahead 6-3, UCSD got it back to 6-5 before the Mustangs went on a 9-3 run to pull ahead 15-8. The Tritons wouldn't get any closer than within five points from there. With Cal Poly leading 20-14, the Mustangs finished the set on a 5-1 run to win it 25-15.
The second set was a much different story as UCSD started the set by getting out to a 6-2 lead and later a 14-5 advantage. Cal Poly got it back to within four points at 14-10 before the Tritons went on a 4-1 run to go back up by seven. Later with UCSD ahead 20-16, the Tritons ended the set on a 5-2 run to win it 25-18.
The Mustangs got back on track in the third set, hitting .382. It was a back-and-forth affair early until, with Cal Poly leading 7-6, the Mustangs used a 6-3 run to go up by four at 13-9. UCSD got it back to within one at 14-13 and kept it close until, tied at 19, Cal Poly pulled away for good with a 6-2 run to win the set 25-21.
The Tritons answered back in the fourth set, holding Cal Poly to a .000 hitting percentage while hitting .263 themselves. Once again, UCSD got out to a 6-2 lead to start and later as much as a 17-8 lead. Cal Poly fought its way back to get it within two points at 18-16. That's when the Tritons scored three of the next four points to go up 21-17 and went on to win the set 25-19.
In the fifth set race to 15, there were eight ties and two lead changes. UCSD went ahead 4-2 before the Mustangs tied it 4-4. The two teams went back-and-forth from there until, tied at 11, a Dueck service ace followed by a Stockham kill put Cal Poly up 13-11. The Tritons scored the next point to make it 13-12 before a Mustang block followed by a kill by Phillips clinched the match for Cal Poly 15-12.
The Mustangs are now 2-2 on the year in five-set matches. In the Big West standings after Friday night, Cal Poly still sits in third at 7-2 behind first-place UC Santa Barbara at 9-1 and second-place Hawai'i at 8-1. The Gauchos swept the Rainbow Wahine Friday night to gain sole possession of first.
Cal Poly will be right back in action again at home Saturday afternoon when they host UC Irvine at Mott Athletics Center at 2 p.m.
