SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham had a team-high 11 kills and redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers recorded her sixth double-double of the season as the Cal Poly volleyball team swept CSUN 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-14) on Saturday at Mott Athletics Center to earn its first home win of the season.
Stockham's 11 kills were on a .290 hitting percentage. She also added two blocks. Stivers had 10 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt had an extremely efficient offensive match, contributing 11 kills while hitting .562. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out 34 assists while also adding eight digs, three kills, and a team-high three service aces.
As a team, the Mustangs (5-10, 3-1 BWC) won nearly every statistical category over the Matadors (2-12, 1-3 BWC). Cal Poly had 45 kills compared to 31 for CSUN, hit .340 compared to .103, had eight digs to CSUN's four, and had 53 digs to the Matadors' 44. The Mustangs also sided-out at a staggering 72 percent rate to CSUN's 47 percent.
The first set was tight early until Cal Poly at 9-7, went on a 4-1 run to make it 13-8. At 14-10, the Mustangs pulled away for good with an 11-2 run to end the set and win it 25-12. In that set, Cal Poly hit .548 without an attack error and held the Matadors to a .094 hitting percentage.
In the second set, CSUN went ahead 10-6 before the Mustangs responded with a 7-3 run to tie it at 13. The teams exchanged points from there until, tied at 20, Cal Poly scored three straight to go up 23-20. The Matadors then scored back-to-back points to cut it one. With Cal Poly leading 24-23, an Amy Hiatt kill won the set for the Mustangs 25-23.
Cal Poly never trailed in the third set. With the Mustangs leading 8-7, they went on a 6-1 run to pull ahead 14-8. They never looked back from there as CSUN never got it closer than five points with Cal Poly going on to win the set 25-14 thanks in part to hitting .459 for the set and holding CSUN to a .093 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs now hold a 3-1 record in Big West play and are currently in third place. They go on the road next week to face UC Riverside on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. followed by a trip up to UC Davis on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m.
