FORT COLLINS, Colorado -- Facing a 12-stroke deficit after the completion of the suspended second round of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic and competing against 20- to 25-mile-per-hour winds and a temperature of about 50 degrees during the final round, prospects seemed dim in Cal Poly's quest for a second straight victory in Colorado.
Mission accomplished.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs posted the best round of the day, a four-person three-over-par 291 total, and leapfrogged second-round leader Nevada, runner-up Colorado State and third-place Incarnate Word for a five-stroke victory Tuesday at the Ptarmigan Country Club.
"Today, we competed in very challenging conditions," said Aagaard. "The greens stayed firm and fast through the competition, which made today even harder when the wind was blowing. To come from that many behind and to win by five is a great feat."
Freshman Kaylyn Noh, senior Caroline Cantlay and junior Jensen Jalufka led the charge as the Mustangs, who won the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at Highlands Ranch near Denver nine days earlier, won consecutive tournaments for the fourth time in program history.
Noh was the only golfer in the field of 81 to score in the 60s Tuesday, carding a 69 for her fourth round in the 60s this season. Her scorecard featured five birdies and a pair of bogeys as Noh climbed from a 16th-place tie following the second round into second place alone with an even-par 216 total.
"Kaylyn with a minus-3 today showed her competitiveness, grit and golf skill," Aagaard said of Noh, who has two seconds and a fourth in four fall tournaments, her first collegiate season.
Cantlay checked in with an even-par 72 on the 6,468-yard course, jumping from a tie for 16th place into a sixth-place tie with Victoria Gailey of Nevada, each with 219 aggregates. Cantlay eagled the 510-yard second hole and also recorded three birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey.
Jalufka posted a 73 for a 222 total and a tie for 12th place with two other golfers. Jalufka carded two birdies and three bogeys for her one-over-par round.
Also scoring for Cal Poly were Nicole Neale with a 77 for a 223 total and 15th-place tie and Kamille Dimayuga with an 81 for a 228 total and 33rd-place tie.
Capturing top individual honors was Ellen Nicholas of Incarnate Word with rounds of 69, 71 and 72 for a 212 total and a four-stroke win over Noh. Leah John and Anitra Khoth, both of Nevada, shared third place, one shot behind Noh. Khoth led after the completion of the second round, suspended Monday due to darkness with about half the field still on the course, but shot a final-round 78.
Cal Poly finished with a 12-over-par 876 total while Nevada settled for second place at 881 and tournament host Colorado State third at 886. Incarnate Word was another shot back in fourth place. The Mustangs were consistent throughout the tournament with a 292 in the opening round, followed by a 293 total and Tuesday's 291.
"Each of the three rounds this week, we had a slow start and then picked it up, rolled in putts and finished strong," said Aagaard.
Noh was second in par-4 scoring at three over par while Jalufka was fifth at even par. Noh and Cantlay both were one over par on the par-3 holes, tied for fifth place.
Incarnate Word's Nicholas carded two eagles in the tournament while Cantlay was one of 11 golfers with one eagle over 54 holes. Neale led the entire field in birdies with 12 while Cantlay, Noh and Jalufka all carded 10 birdies, tied for second place.
Cal Poly completed the fall season with back-to-back wins and, after some time off, will get ready for the spring season, which begins Feb. 7-8 with the Valley Invitational at the Bakersfield Country Club.
"We are now done with the fall competition and will have a week off before we get started on conditioning and winter practices to continue this great trend for the team," said Aagaard.
