Cal Poly Falls at Hawai’i Friday, 0-3

HONOLULU — Cal Poly's four-match win streak came to an end Friday at the hands of the University of Hawai'i, falling to the Rainbow Wahine (10-5, 7-0 BWC) 0-3 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) inside SimpliFi Arena in Honolulu.
The Mustangs (8-11, 6-2 BWC) were led on the night by redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham's 10 kills to go along with seven digs. Junior transfer outside hitter Kristina Jordan saw her first significant action of the season after returning from injury, coming into the match in the second set to record seven kills. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt also added seven kills while hitting .250. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea had 28 assists while also adding a team-high four blocks. Reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week Peyton Dueck had a match-high 16 digs while junior defensive specialist Lea Ungar added 15 digs.
Cal Poly suffered a big blow when redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers, the team leader in kills on the season, suffered an apparent elbow injury early in the first set. She was able to play the rest of the first set but did not play the rest of the match.
As a team, Hawai'i hit .242 compared to .130 for the Mustangs. Hawai'i also had a sideout percentage of 68 for the match to Cal Poly's 55-percent.
In the first set, the Rainbow Wahine got out to a 6-2 lead to start it. The Mustangs then scored three straight to cut it to 6-5 before Hawai'i scored three straight of its own to go up by four. Trailing 14-9, a 4-0 run by Cal Poly got it back to within one. Hawai'i followed with a 6-1 run to push their lead to 20-14. The Mustangs got it to as close as 21-18 before the Rainbow Wahine finished the set on a 4-1 run to win it 25-19.
The second set was back-and-forth for the majority of it with nine ties and two lead changes. Neither team held a lead of more than two points through the first half of the set. With Cal Poly leading 12-11, the Rainbow Wahine went on an 8-2 run to go ahead 19-14. They never looked back from there, going up by as many as seven at 22-15 before going on to win the set 25-19.
The third set was even closer and saw 14 ties and five lead changes. Cal Poly took a 4-2 lead before Hawai'i answered with four consecutive points. Neither team took a lead of more than two points until the end of the set. With the Mustangs up 22-21, Hawai'i scored the next four points to win the set 25-22 and win the match.
Cal Poly still sits in third place in the Big West standings at 6-2. They now get set for a four-match homestand which starts next weekend when the Mustangs host UC San Diego on Friday at 7 p.m. and UC Irvine Saturday at 2 p.m.
