First-Place Cal Poly Downs CSUN on Sunday, 3-0
10/10/2021 2:39:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Nikki Trucco's team leading eighth goal of the season in the 10th minute stood as the game-winner Sunday afternoon and junior defender Emily Talmi (above) and freshman midfielder Kate Reedy completed the scoring for the Cal Poly women's soccer program as the Mustangs topped CSUN at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, 3-0.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made four saves for Cal Poly (9-6-0, 5-1-0), including a 37th-minute sequence where she stopped a penalty opportunity and a rebounded attempt from Matadors forward Alyssa Aguilar. Aguilar then struck the cross bar on the same sequence as the Matadors failed to capitalize on their best scoring chance of the afternoon.
With Sunday's win, Cal Poly improved to 15 points in the Big West Conference standings to retain first place. The Mustangs increased their lead over joint second-place Long Beach State (10 points; idle Sunday) and UC Santa Barbara (10 points; faces CSU Bakersfield at 5 p.m. Sunday).
Outshooting CSUN, 13-9, Cal Poly produced the game's opening goal 10 minutes into action with junior forward Brooke Rubenstein streaking down the right edge of the Matadors penalty area before crossing for Trucco, who tapped her eighth goal of 2021 past goalkeeper Amanda Delgado. Trucco now sits just one goal behind Long Beach State forward Lena Silano for the Big West lead.
Talmi then doubled Cal Poly's lead in the 27th, latching onto the ball at the halfway line, dribbling up the left side of the field and scoring past Delgado near the left post.
Following a 37th-minute Mustang hand ball in the box, CSUN had the opportunity to halve Cal Poly's lead before Aguilar – with three of her team's nine attempts – saw a penalty saved, a second attempt stopped by Samuel and third fired over the cross bar.
Into the second half, Cal Poly tacked on its final goal 20 minutes from full time with sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz finding Reedy, whose fourth goal of the year – all in reserve appearances – banged off the cross bar and over the goal line. With her fifth assist, Ortiz took sole possession of the team lead and now ranks second among Big West players.
Samuel recorded her fourth and final save in the 76th to chalk up a second successive shutout.
Cal Poly closes its 11-match, regular season home schedule when hosting UC San Diego on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 12 noon.
