Cal Poly Moves Back into First with 3-2 Sunday Win
10/17/2021 3:50:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Forward Nikki Trucco equaled the Cal Poly women's soccer program record for quickest goal to open a match and midfielder Camille Lafaix's 99th-minute goal decided a 3-2 victory as the Mustangs reclaimed first place atop the Big West Conference versus UC San Diego at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel produced two saves for Cal Poly (10-6-0, 6-1-0), which trailed UC Santa Barbara (7-6-3, 5-1-1) by a point in the Big West standings entering play Sunday. With the Gauchos idle, Cal Poly improved to 18 points in the standings. With three regular season matches remaining – all on the road – Cal Poly visits UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Oct. 21. Kickoff from Harder Stadium is 7 p.m.
Just 30 seconds after the opening whistle, Trucco scored her team leading ninth goal of the season after an errant ball off UC San Diego goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald rolled back into her path. The goal equaled an Oct. 30, 1997 effort from Patty Teal in a 3-2 loss to BYU for fastest goal in program history.
The Mustangs forced Fitzgerald into four first-half saves before doubling the lead on 53 minutes as a corner kick from junior Talmi found the head of fellow defender Danielle Anderson, who laid a pass off for sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz. Ortiz then fired her third goal of the season from the left side of the UC San Diego penalty area.
During the first meeting between the two programs, UC San Diego halved Cal Poly's lead in the 66th minute as Caitlin McCarthy latched onto a turnover in the Mustang penalty area before feeding fellow midfielder Lucy Tang near the right post.
UC San Diego then tied the matchup 10 minutes later as McCarthy earned her second assist by heading down for defender Ava D'Arcangelo, who scored at the right post.
The Mustangs were turned away by Fitzgerald three more times in the second half and once again in overtime before Ortiz produced her Big West leading sixth assist by flicking a pass over the UC San Diego back line for Lafaix, who ran down the ball before scoring her seventh goal of 2021.
