Cal Poly Stays in First with 2-1 Win at UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA – Forward Nikki Trucco scored her team high 10th goal of the season and fellow sophomore Camille Lafaix's eighth goal of 2021 in the 59th minute stood as the game-winner Thursday evening as the Big West Conference leading Cal Poly women's soccer program edged Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara at Harder Stadium, 2-1.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel added two saves for Cal Poly (11-6-0, 7-1-0) which retained first place atop the Big West Conference standings, improving to 21 points and relegating UC Santa Barbara (7-7-3, 5-2-1) to third place with 16 points. Second place Long Beach State (9-5-2, 6-1-1), which entered action on Thursday tied with UC Santa Barbara for second, improved to 19 points after topping CSUN, 1-0.
Cal Poly's 21-point total is the program's highest since winning the 2013 regular season title with the same amount.
With two regular season dates remaining, Cal Poly visits Long Beach State on Thursday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. with the winner earning first place in the Big West standings.
Cal Poly, which won at UC Santa Barbara for the first time since 2013, took the opening lead after just three minutes as Trucco – second among Big West players with her 10 goals – scored inside the opening 10 minutes for the fourth successive match. Junior forward Brooke Rubenstein earned the first of her two assists.
The Mustangs forced UC Santa Barbara into four saves during the ensuing eight minutes and five total in the first half.
Samuel, meanwhile, was tested once was in the first half before the Gauchos tied the game with their first shot on target of the second as forward Claire Grouwinkel recorded her first goal of the year in the 53rd minute.
Cal Poly, which outshot UC Santa Barbara, 22-11, required just six minutes to surge ahead as Lafaix (above) enjoyed her second game-winning goal in as many matches. Improving to seven assists on the season, Rubenstein tied three other players for top spot in the Big West.
