Mustangs Clinch Share of Big West Regular Season Title with 1-0 Win
10/28/2021 8:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LONG BEACH – With sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz's ninth-minute goal marking the difference, the Cal Poly women's soccer program clinched a share of its first Big West Conference regular season title since 2013 with a 1-0 triumph Thursday evening at Long Beach State.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel recorded five saves for Cal Poly (12-6-0, 8-1-0), which improved to 24 points in the Big West standings and now leads second place UC Irvine (12-5-0, 7-2-0) by three with one regular season game remaining. That matchup occurs at UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. with Cal Poly needing just a draw to secure sole possession of the regular season title and the right to host the Nov. 4 and 7 Big West Tournament.
Thursday's win marked Cal Poly eighth Big West regular season title since joining the conference in 1996.
UC Irvine, which entered Thursday's round of matches in third place, improved to 21 points after edging UC Santa Barbara, 1-0.
Both Samuel and Long Beach State goalkeeper Zora Standifer were forced into saves inside the opening six minutes before Cal Poly notched the night's only goal in the ninth as a failed clearance landed for Ortiz (above, center), who fired her fourth goal of the year in the back of the net.
Samuel returned with saves in the 17th and 31st minutes to preserve Cal Poly's lead. She then chalked up saves in the 51st and 61st to keep the Mustangs in front.
Following Ortiz's goal, Cal Poly enjoyed two opportunities in each half to double its lead, but was turned away by Standifer four more times.
