Cal Poly Falls at UC Irvine, 2-0; Splits Regular Season Title
10/31/2021 4:42:00 PM | Women's Soccer
IRVINE – Goals from UC Irvine forwards Desiree Mendoza and Destinee Manzo decided Sunday's finale as the Cal Poly women's soccer program – with a 2-0 loss at Crawford Field – split the Big West Conference regular season title with the Anteaters, but dropped the opportunity to host the Nov. 4 and 7 Big West Tournament.
Cal Poly (12-7-0, 8-2-0) entered Sunday's regular season finale leading the Big West standings on 24 points and sitting three ahead of the Anteaters (13-5-0, 8-2-0). UC Irvine's victory not only split the regular season title, but – through the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage – handed the Anteaters Big West Tournament hosting rights for the Thursday, Nov. 4 semifinals and Sunday, Nov. 7 championship.
Cal Poly, which secured no worse than a share of the Big West title with a 1-0 victory at Long Beach State (Oct. 28), will face third place Cal State Fullerton (10-9-0, 7-4-0) in the first of two Big West Tournament semifinal matchups on Thursday, Nov. 4. Kickoff time is still to be determined with top-seeded UC Irvine hosting No. 4 UC Santa Barbara in Thursday's second semifinal.
The advancing sides from Thursday's semifinal round will meet in the Sunday, Nov. 7 championship match.
The Mustangs, making a return to the Big West Tournament after a seven-year hiatus, earned their first Big West title since 2013.
During Sunday's matchup, UC Irvine scored with its first shot on target as Mendoza fired her fourth goal of the season past Cal Poly freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel in the seventh minute.
Cal Poly, which equaled UC Irvine's eight-shot total, forced Anteaters goalkeeper Glo Hinojosa into a pair of first-half saves as junior midfielder Megan Hansen was turned away in the 34th and 43rd minutes.
Out of the break, Mustang sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz (above) was stopped by Hinojosa in the 49th. UC Irvine then doubled the lead in the 54th as Mendoza set up Manzo for the 2-0 advantage.
Cal Poly enjoyed one more shot on target to close the match with junior midfielder Sidra Bugsch turned away in the 76th minute.
