Cal Poly Reaches First Big West Tournament Title Game in 12 Years
11/4/2021 7:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz's 14th-minute strike combined with a Cal State Fullerton own goal was enough to send the Cal Poly women's soccer program to its first Big West Conference Tournament title match since 2009 as the Mustangs dealt the Titans a 2-0 semifinal defeat at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel recorded two saves to chalk up her fourth shutout in seven appearances for second-seeded Cal Poly (13-7-0), which will face host and top-seeded UC Irvine in the Sunday, Nov. 7 championship match. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. with the winner earning the Big West's automatic NCAA Tournament invitation.
Sunday's match marks Cal Poly's seventh tournament title game appearance, but first since 2009 when the Mustangs drew UC Santa Barbara, 1-1, before the Gauchos claimed the championship on penalties.
Cal Poly last won the Big West Tournament championship and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2004.
The Mustangs, who split the regular season title with UC Irvine, had already twice tested Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Noa Schumacher before Ortiz (above) scored her fifth goal of the season by firing from just outside the penalty area and into the left corner of the Titan net.
Cal Poly outshot Cal State Fullerton in the first half, 6-3, with senior defender Danielle Anderson stopped by Schumacher in the 38th before sophomore midfielder Annette Greenley was turned away in the 43rd.
The Mustangs, however, doubled their lead six minutes after the restart as Titans forward Sydney Douglas played a back pass that went past Schumacher and over the goal line for a 2-0 advantage.
Samuel, who earned her first save a minute before Ortiz's game-winner, made a final save in the 76th to preserve a 2-0 decision.
