Cal Poly Edged in Big West Tournament Final by UC Irvine, 1-0
11/7/2021 3:24:00 PM | Women's Soccer
IRVINE – Playing in its first Big West Conference Tournament championship game in 12 years and seeking its first title since 2004, the Cal Poly women's soccer program fell to top-seeded UC Irvine in Sunday's final at Anteater Stadium, 1-0.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel matched a career high with five saves for second-seeded Cal Poly (13-8-0), which was selected to finish seventh in August's preseason coaches poll before splitting the Big West regular season title with UC Irvine (15-5-0).
UC Irvine, which captured its first Big West Tournament title since 2016, secured Sunday's eventual game-winning goal in the 32nd minute, as a ball played out of the Cal Poly penalty box fell for forward Alex Jaquez, who fired her first goal of the season over Samuel and under the center of the cross bar.
Samuel, who recorded four first-half saves, made her first stop in the eighth before registering three more during a 16-second span in the 19th to keep the match scoreless.
The Anteaters then broke through with Sunday's winning goal 13 minutes before the break.
Outshot in the first half, 8-2, Cal Poly produced the opening two attempts of the second with Mustang freshman defender Emma Brown's 55th-minute header turned away by UC Irvine goalkeeper Glo Hinojosa.
After Samuel recorded a fifth save in the 57th, Cal Poly saw a 61st minute attempt from freshman midfielder Kate Reedy cleared off the goal line before sophomore defender Kylie Rojas fired over the bar.
Cal Poly was again denied an equalizer in the 74th with a goal-bound attempt from Reedy blocked by an Anteaters defender.
With a shot from sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz (above) blocked in the 83rd, Cal Poly enjoyed one more opportunity to extend the match, but an 85th-minute attempt by Rojas was caught by Hinojosa.
