10/1/2021 10:16:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly volleyball team saw its first sellout crowd since 2019 at Mott Athletics Center Friday night but the Mustangs fell to UCSB 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21), suffering their first conference loss of the season.
For the Mustangs (4-10, 2-1 BWC), it's their first time being swept at home by a Big West team since 2016 which also came at the hands of the Gauchos (7-8, 3-0 BWC).
UCSB outhit Cal Poly in the match .347 to .133 and also sided-out at a 69 percent clip compared to the Mustangs' 55 percent.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers led the Mustangs offensively with 10 kills while also adding six digs. She has now recorded double-digit kills in her last eight matches. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added nine kills on the night. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea had 23 assists to go with eight digs.
The Gauchos never trailed in the first set. They got out to a 6-3 advantage before later extending the lead to as much as eight at 21-13. Cal Poly climbed back with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 22-18. Following a UCSB timeout, the Gauchos finished the set on a 3-1 run to win it 25-19.
The second set was tight for most of it, with neither team holding a lead of more than two through the first 32 combined points. Tied at 16, UCSB went on a 7-1 run to pull away 23-17 and went on to win the set 25-19.
In the third set, in which the Gauchos hit .400, it was again close for most of it. Tied at 15, the Mustangs scored three straight points to take a 18-15 lead. UCSB then answered with seven consecutive points to go ahead 22-18. Cal Poly cut the lead to three from there twice but could not pull off the comeback and lost 25-21.
The Mustangs will look to rebound Saturday when they host CSUN at 2 p.m. from Mott Athletics Center.
