1/23/2021 7:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball
IRVINE – Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma (above) chalked up his team leading sixth double-digit scoring game of the season Saturday evening with 10 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program closed its season series against UC Irvine with a 67-44 loss inside the Bren Events Center.
Freshman forward Brantly Stevenson added nine points for Cal Poly (2-10, 0-6), which trailed Big West Conference leader UC Irvine (8-4, 4-0) by five points at halftime. The Anteaters, however, began the second half with an 18-1 run to quickly put the decision out of reach.
The Mustangs, who held UC Irvine to a 36.7 (22-for-60) percent field goal mark, received eight points from sophomore guard Colby Rogers. Koroma also pulled down a game high seven rebounds for Cal Poly.
Cal Poly returns home to host CSUN for a two-game, Jan. 29-30 series inside Mott Athletics Center. Tip time both afternoons is 4 p.m.
Junior forward Tuukka Jaakkola sank three free throws and Rogers added two more to open the scoring for Cal Poly, but the Mustangs were held without a field goal until freshman guard Aidan Prukop hit a jumper eight minutes into action. Stevenson added another jumper during the next possession and Cal Poly, despite being kept to a 31.3 (5-for-16) percent shooting start, grabbed a 20-18 lead with five-and-a-half minutes left in the opening period after Rogers nailed a three-pointer.
The two sides traded the lead three times to close the half before UC Irvine took its 28-23 advantage into the break.
Spurred by a three-pointer from guard JC Butler, however, UC Irvine scored the opening 11 points of the second half to take a double-digit lead. Jaakkola snapped the run with a free throw, but UC Irvine followed with a 7-0 run to increase the advantage to 46-24 with 14-and-a-half minutes remaining en route to victory.
