
Noel Wins in Singles and Doubles, But Mustangs Fall at No. 42 Denver

DENVER — Senior Antoine Noel won at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles but it was not enough as the Cal Poly men's tennis team fell on the road Friday to No. 42 Denver, 4-2.
In doubles, The Mustangs' (3-6) No. 2 duo of junior Alex Stater and sophomore Gary Vardanyan won their won their match 6-4. After Denver won at the No. 3 position, Noel and freshman Joe Leather took down the Pioneers' (11-1) Matt Summers and James Davis, who are ranked by the ITA as the No. 52 doubles tandem in the nation, 6-4 from the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point for Cal Poly.
Stater and Vardanyan are now 2-0 together this season while Noel and Leather picked up their first doubles win as a duo.
In singles, Noel (pictured) battled back from dropping the first set to win the next two and take down Summers from the No. 1 slot, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Noel is now 5-3 this year, all from the top spot in the lineup.
However, Denver picked up wins at the second, third, fourth, and six spots in singles to seal the 4-2 victory.
Cal Poly will remain in Denver and will look to bounce back Saturday when facing Lamar University at 5:30 p.m. PT.
