DENVER – The Cal Poly men's tennis team picked up its fourth win of the season Saturday after defeating Lamar 4-1 at a neutral site match in Denver.
For the fourth consecutive match, the Mustangs (4-6) won the doubles point after getting wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. The No. 3 pairing of juniors Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkiryk got things going first with a 6-1 victory to move their record to 4-1 this season. The No. 2 pairing of junior Alex Stater and sophomore Gary Vardanyan clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win to remain unbeaten together at 3-0.
Once singles began, the Cardinals (6-11) tied the score 1-1 after a victory at the No. 1 position. Cal Poly regained the lead a short time later after freshman Joe Leather won his match at the No. 2 spot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 for his third win of the season.
Stater put the Mustangs up 3-1 after he won his match in straight sets at the No. 5 slot, 6-1, 6-4. He is now 4-2 in singles this season.
The match was then clinched after freshman Fernando Fonseca (pictured) took down his opponent at the No. 4 position, 7-6 (5), 6-2 for his second win of the season.
Cal Poly will return home next week for three matches at Mustang Tennis Complex. The Mustangs will host Gonzaga on Wednesday at 2 p.m. following the women's tennis team's match against Pacific. They will then welcome in Utah State on Friday and BYU on Saturday. Both of those matches will start at noon.
