SAN JOSE – Junior second baseman Sarah Wulff's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning helped hand the Cal Poly softball team a 2-1 victory during Friday's opening matchup at the Silicon Valley Classic, co-hosted by San Jose State and Santa Clara. Cal Poly, however, dropped the second game of Friday's slate to San Jose State, 3-1.
During Friday's tournament-opening victory against defending Mountain West Conference champion Colorado State (5-6), Cal Poly starting sophomore lefthander Krystyna Allman (4-1) – who struck out eight – allowed hits during four of the opening five innings, but stranded eight Rams baserunners to keep the matchup scoreless.
Colorado State, however, broke through with the game's opening run in the top of the sixth as shortstop Haley Donaldson drew a two-out, full-count, bases-loaded walk to force home left fielder Tara Shadowen.
Held to just two hits through the opening five innings by Rams starting righthander Jessica Jarecki (1-3), Cal Poly (6-5) tied the game at the first opportunity as Wulff followed a leadoff single from freshman left fielder Sydney Frankenberger with a sacrifice bunt. Senior designated player Shelby Jeffries then delivered a single to plate Frankenberger.
After Allman stranded one more Colorado State baserunner in the top of the seventh, Cal Poly forced home the decisive run during the bottom half. With junior center fielder Noellah Ramos on third base after the result of back-to-back Mustang groundouts, Wulff (above) singled to complete the game.
During Friday's second game versus San Jose State (12-2), the Spartans enjoyed solitary hits during each of the opening two innings before producing the eventual winning runs in the third through a Mustang fielding error and a wild pitch from Cal Poly starting senior righthander Steffi Best (2-3).
Cal Poly halved San Jose State's lead in the top of the fourth as senior first baseman Hailey Martin followed a two-out double from sophomore catcher Lily Amos with a run-scoring single that plated freshman pinch runner Ellie Yamashita for a 2-1 disadvantage.
San Jose State, however, grabbed the run back in the fifth with designated player Alyssa Graham singling to score second baseman Cassidy Clark.
The Mustangs were held to just one hit the remainder of the game.
Martin finished with two hits against San Jose State. Best struck out three Spartans in the loss.
Cal Poly continues Silicon Valley Classic play on Saturday, Feb. 22 with an 11:30 a.m. matchup against California Baptist at Santa Clara before facing the host Broncos at 4:30 p.m.
