SANTA CLARA – Sophomore lefthander Krystyna Allman and junior righthander Dakota Casper (above) combined on a complete-game, one-hit, five-inning victory against California Baptist as the Cal Poly softball program opened Saturday action at the Silicon Valley Classic with 12-0 triumph. Cal Poly then closed Saturday with a 4-3, come-from-behind victory against host Santa Clara as junior second baseman Sarah Wulff's two-out, run-scoring single in the top of the seventh handed the Mustangs a 4-3 lead and the eventual victory.
During Saturday's opening matchup against California Baptist (4-7), Cal Poly (8-5) scored all the runs required for victory in the top of the first through a run-scoring fielder's choice from freshman shortstop Xiara Diaz and a two-out, RBI single by catcher Lily Amos.
Cal Poly furthered its lead to 5-0 in the second after freshman right fielder Sydney Frankenberger produced a two-run double before scoring herself through a run-scoring double from the next Mustang, junior center fielder Noellah Ramos.
The Mustangs then tacked on seven more runs for the 12-0 advantage in the third, highlighted by a leadoff Amos homer, a Ramos two-RBI single and a Diaz two-run triple.
In the circle, Allman conceded California Baptist's lone hit with two down in the bottom of the first inning before retiring the next four Lancers. Casper (1-0) took over to start the third and set down the Lancers in order three successive times to complete the run-rule victory. Casper struck out three in her first win of the season.
During Saturday's second victory against Santa Clara (5-7), Mustang senior starting righthander Steffi Best kept the Broncos to just one hit through the opening two innings.
Santa Clara broke a scoreless deadlock during the bottom half of the third as a two-out fielder's choice from third baseman Emma Bickford brought home both left fielder Ashley Trierweiler and catcher Sarah Ellersick for a 2-0 Broncos advantage.
The Broncos then pushed the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth with right fielder Taylor Burns grounding out to plate Bickford.
Offensively, Cal Poly produced seven hits through the opening six innings and stranded 10 baserunners – including the bases loaded in the top of the sixth.
Cal Poly, however, found the winning runs in the top of the seventh with Amos opening the scoring with a one-out double that plated Diaz. With senior Alyssa McKiernan on to pinch run, senior first baseman Hailey Martin swatted her first home run of the season to right field to tie the matchup. Sophomore third baseman Maddie Amos followed with a single before freshman catcher Kai Barrett drew a four-pitch walk. Wulff then delivered her second game-winning hit in as many days, driving in Amos with two down.
Allman (4-1), who tossed the final four and two-thirds innings and struck out five, stranded two Santa Clara baserunners in the bottom of the seventh to close the victory.
Cal Poly completes Silicon Valley Classic play on Sunday, Feb. 23 versus Boise State at 9 a.m.
